Farley Food growing session dates

Hello all,

As Geoff reported at the Networking Meeting this morning, and as you may already have seen from posters, flyers and emails around Farley and the Farley networking group, Groundwork has now launched its Farley Food community growing project!

The growing sessions are taking place at three sites (Whipperley Medical Centre, Barnfield South Academy and St John the Baptist Church) between now and March 2014.   Dates are below and I've attached a flyer for you to see too.

The aim of the project is to show / teach participants how to grow their own vegetables and soft fruits, from ground preparation through maintenance (ie thinning and weeding) to harvesting. Most of the vegetables will be grown from seed and most of the soft fruits will be grown on from bought plants.

As we are close to the end of the growing season initially we will be growing quick growing vegetables such as lettuce, radish, spinach and pak choi. We will also be sowing seeds of over wintering vegetables for harvesting in the spring / early summer such as broad beans, onions and spring peas.

Next year we will initially be sowing seeds in trays and pots and keeping them indoors until the ground is warm enough to plant them out, at which time we will also sow other seeds directly into the ground. I’m hoping that the weather will be warm enough by late March to directly seed a greater number of vegetables including beetroot, carrots, peas, parsnips, leeks. I’m also hoping to be able to buy and plant soft fruit such as strawberries and raspberries then.

Next year we will also be growing herbs – some from seed and some from bought plants.

As well as all the vegetables etc. mentioned above we would also like to know what other vegetables and fruit people would like to grow (some maybe instead of our suggestions) and we will try them as well.

I really think we could all learn from this article and perhaps support some of the residents of Farley Hill using this aricle as a starting point.
